Still, it's bizarre that Anthony Mann, of all directors, demanded (and got) this. He began in low budget films noir like T-Men and then made several excellent, but not super-expensive, westerns in the 1950s, largely with James Stewart. That he somehow out-Kubricked Kubrick is astonishing.
